INSURANCE
Comprehensive Motor Vehicle Insurance including third party and public liability, is included in our rates. An Accident Damage Excess (ADE) does apply however. This excess may be reduced at the time of rental by purchasing Accident Excess Reduction (AER).
The renter will be fully liable for any damage to the Thrifty vehicle and any third party property, if the terms and conditions of the rental agreement are breached.
The accident damage Excess may be substantially reduced (at the renter’s option) at the time of rental by purchasing Accident Excess Reduction (AER). The rates for AER are subject to change without notice, but current rates are as follows:
Groups ECAR, ICMR, CCAR, ICAR, FCAR and FWAR: Excess NZ$1687.50 / AER: NZ$29 per day
Groups IFAR, FFAR, LVAR and XVAR: Excess NZ$2813.00 / AER: NZ$24 per day
Renter's travelling without a valid credit card must leave a cash* deposit equivalent to the total cost of any sundry charges (ski racks, chains, baby seats, Accident Excess Reduction (AER), etc) and the applicable Accident Damage Excess (ADE) and a $100 fuel bond.
(ADE and fuel bonds are refundable upon termination of the hire when vehicle is returned undamaged and full of fuel)
* Travellers cheques are acceptable but we do not accept personal cheques.
Airport / Ferry Terminal Service charges: Rentals initiated by or commencing from airports or Interislander ferry terminal locations are subject to a nominal Airport/Ferry Service Charge (AFSC), which the hirer will pay directly to Thrifty Car Rental.
Cancellation Fees: Once a booking has been confirmed and the hirer has paid a deposit, then the booking is subject to the cancellation policy. The deposit is forfeited if bookings are cancelled thirty days or more prior to departure.
- Up to 30 days prior: NZ$150.00 deposit per person
- 20 – 29 days prior: 15% of gross rental
- 6-19 days prior: 30% of gross rental
- 1- 5 days prior, on day of pick-up, no show or when travel has commenced: No Refund
If the vehicle is returned early for any reason whatsoever after travel has commenced then no refund is available.

Fuel: Fuel is not included in our rates. Each vehicle is supplied with a full tank of fuel, which is refilled at the renter's expense on return. If the vehicle is not returned with a full tank, the renter will be charged for the fuel required to refill the tank at applicable Thrifty rates at the time.
Rental Period: Rates are based on a minimum rental period of 24-hours (from the time the rental starts). At Thrifty we allow a 59-minute grace period at the end of the hire, after which each extra hour is charged at one fifth of the daily rate, to a maximum of four hours, after which an extra full day will be charged.
Renter Qualification: The minimum rental age is 21 years (25 years for vehicle classes PTAR, LTAR, LDAR). There is no maximum age. All drivers must hold a valid full driving licence, which has been held for at least one year. A current international driving licence must accompany driving licences issued in a language other than English.
There is no charge for additional drivers. Minimum rental age and other requirements for additional drivers will be the same as for the renter. Additional drivers must be listed on the rental agreement.
Restricted Roads: Thrifty vehicles are prohibited from the following roads:
- North Island : Ninety-Mile Beach (Northland)
- South Island : Skippers Canyon Road (Queenstown)
Driving on these roads constitutes a breach of the rental agreement and the renter would be fully liable for any damage to the Thrifty vehicle or Third party property occurring as a result.
Vehicle Substitution and Design: Every effort shall be made to provide the vehicle you requested but where a vehicle is unavailable for any reason Thrifty reserves the right to provide a comparably high standard vehicle at no extra cost to you. While including the same facilities, vehicles may vary slightly to those shown due to manufacturer design changes.
