Remarkables Lodge Vintage Scenic Flight - an unforgettable Experience
Remarkables Lodge history dates over 80 years, and you can relive the 1930's lifestyle with a scenic flight over Fiordland in a genuine - and perfectly restored - 1930's airliner. An hour's drive south of the Lodge through scenic Southland is Old Mandeville airfield, home of the Croydon Aircraft Company which was established in 1986 by Colin and Maeva Smith, as a restoration facility for wood and fabric type 1920-30’s aeroplanes.
Most of the work carried out is to original specifications and materials, as were used in the 1930’s when these types of aircraft were built originally. The company has many of the original de Havilland drawings which is essential if the completed aircraft are to be granted a Certificate of Airworthiness by the NZ Civil Aviation Authority.
To-day there are 11 employees and the Company has a world wide reputation for its restoration work and they have restored numerous aircraft, two of which are available for our guests.
A four passenger Dragonfly biplane. This was an early “Corporate aircraft”, designed for the business men of the day. There are now only 2 of this type left flying in the world, the other is in the UK .
An eight passenger Rapide biplane. These Aircraft flew in NZ for NAC (the forerunner of Air NZ) on the main Intercity routes, and also played a large part in developing early tourist air travel in scenic areas.
Following a guided tour of the restoration factory and the classic aircraft hangar, you board your selected aircraft for a scenic flight over Fiordland via Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound, landing at Queentown airport. Optionally, a landing can be made at Milford Sound for the Milford Sound boat cruise.
To complement the trip, transfers from the Lodge to Old Mandeville and from Queenstown airport back to the Lodge are in classic Jaguar cars.
Optionally available is a short aerobatic flight (also optional - straight and level flight!) in a restored Tiger Moth 2 seat open cockpit aircraft.
Inclusions:
- Two nights accommodation in two Premier Suites
- Scenic flight as described above
Cost: NZ$2060 per person twin share
Prices are based on 4 guests using the 4 seat Dragonfly aircraft.
