February / March 2010 - Newsletter

Happy New Year and welcome to our first newsletter for 2010!!!

We had a wonderful trip to Europe in September/October, visiting our families in France, England and Germany. In January we spent our 2 week summer holiday in beautiful Okiwi Bay in the Marlborough Sounds - such an amazing part of New Zealand!

There are some great motorhome specials coming up for the travel period May to September (pay for 14 days and receive up to 7 days free on the standard rate) and also for the coming summer season (i.e.: free ferry crossing, etc.). Travel by motorhome is a great and flexibel way to explore New Zealand. Book yours now and secure the current exchange rate as the New Zealand Dollar is getting stronger again.

We look forward to plan your New Zealand experience with you!!

Kind regards,

Sabine

South Canterbury Tours & EnglishPlus Aoraki

South Canterbury Tours is a partnership between Jane McKenzie and Keith Tyler-Smith, set up to offer small, personally escorted tours for special interest and study groups in and around South Canterbury. Jane and Keith love hosting travellers and guests and you can be sure of a warm welcome when you come to their place.

You get an insider’s guide to rural village life and the people and stories of the central South Island. Jane and Keith know their own backyard very well and love sharing it with visitors and international travellers.

They offer four themed tours: Food & Wine, Heritage & Culture, ESOL Holiday Week, and ESOL Express. All tours are designed to support speakers of English as a second language. However, only the ESOL tours have a core programme of informal language practice and are therefore specifically for non-native English speakers. They also offer the ESOL options as EnglishPlus Aoraki. The Food & Wine and Heritage & Culture Tours will incorporate some language support if a tour group requires it.

Packages start from just 2 days and can therefore be easily incorporated into your itinerary.

Jane has a BA (First Class Honours) in English, a post-graduate diploma in teaching and learning, is a qualified and experienced ESOL teacher, and worked as a journalist at home and abroad for many years.

Keith has a Masters in Education (with a major in online learning), a Bachelor of Broadcasting Communications, and worked in television for many years as a director and producer.

Their combine EnglishPlus Aoraki with their other business South Canterbury Tours, offering you the complete package to experience the real New Zealand. Tours are by arrangement and involve hands-on cuisine tourism activities such as picking fruit, cheese and chocolate-making workshops, and visits to other regional food producers such as Talbot Forest Cheeses.

Speight's Coast to Coast Race - 12 & 13 February 2010 - South Island

Over 800 competitors will vie for places in the 28th Anniversary race. The Speight's Coast to Coast is the world’s premier multi-sport event. It is the benchmark by which all other multi-sport events are judged, both here in New Zealand and overseas.

The Speight's Coast to Coast traverses the South Island of New Zealand from Kumara Beach on the Tasman Sea to Sumner Beach on the Pacific Ocean. Over either two days (individuals or two person teams) or the one-day event (individuals only), competitors cycle 140 kms (three stages of 55km, 15 km and 70 km), run 36 km (including a 33 km mountain stage that crosses the Southern Alps) and kayak 67kms of the grade two Waimakariri River through the Grand Canyon of New Zealand, the Waimakariri Gorge.

Top competitors take ten and three quarter hours to cover the 243kms while the slowest time every recorded was twenty-four and a half hours.

Entries open for the event on June 1st each year. Overseas competitors have until 30th November to enter. About 100 international competitors enter each year, from about 15 countries. The event has been won six times by internationals from Australia, Canada, England and South Africa.

The average age in the event is 36 years and the oldest ever was 75 while the youngest 15. The minimum age to enter is 18 and there is no upper age limit. The school teams section has a minimum age of 16.

$240,000 worth of prizes and race pack goodies, finishers medals, two outrageous dinners, a quality event branded shirt and a cold can of Speight's for finishers. Who could wish for more?

The event is divided into three races - the One-Day or Longest Day event is for individuals only while the Two-Day event is for individuals and two person teams. In the Teams section the runner and the kayaker both do cycling stages. The only requirements for the race are that you meet the minimum age and provide a grade two kayaking certificate if you're an individual or a team kayaker. Oh yes, you should also be fit!
